What resin bound surfacing is
A resin bound surface is a mix of washed, dried aggregate and clear resin, blended in a forced-action mixer and hand-trowelled to a smooth, level finish. Because every stone is coated and bound in the mix, the finished surface is firm underfoot, does not shed loose gravel, and is porous: rain drains through the gaps between the stones into the base below.
It is worth separating this from resin bonded surfacing, which sounds similar and is often sold as the same thing. Bonded surfacing is a layer of resin with loose stone scattered on top. It sheds aggregate over time and it is not permeable, which matters for the planning rules covered on the permeable SuDS page. The build-up, layer by layer
The surface is only as good as what sits under it. A full new installation typically involves:
- Excavation to a depth that suits the ground, commonly around 200mm to 250mm for a domestic drive.
- A compacted stone sub-base, using an open-graded stone where the drive needs to soak water away rather than shed it.
- A binder course of open-textured asphalt or a similar porous base layer, giving the resin a stable, even platform.
- The resin bound wearing course, typically 15mm to 18mm thick for cars, trowelled in one continuous pour per area.
- Edge restraints, such as block, brick or steel edging, so the surface finishes cleanly against walls, bays and boundaries.

The coastal spec: why the resin choice matters here
Lowestoft is the most easterly town in Britain, and much of it sits within a short walk of open water. That has two practical consequences for a resin drive.
First, ultraviolet light. The cheaper aromatic resins amber and darken with UV exposure, which shows badly in lighter aggregate blends. On a south or east facing frontage in Kirkley or Pakefield, full sun off the sea will find that weakness within a few summers. A UV-stable aliphatic resin costs more per square metre and holds its colour, and a straight quote should say plainly which one is being priced.
Second, salt and sand. Salt-laden air corrodes steel and can spall weak concrete, but it does not attack a properly cured resin bound surface, and wind-blown sand brushes or rinses off a sealed, even finish far more easily than it works out of block paving joints.
